When you'll hear from us

Ontario high school applicants:

All of our offers of admission will be made prior to May 29, 2013, and you will have until June 3, 2013 to respond.

  • If you know that the University of Waterloo is the university you wish to attend, you're encouraged to accept your offer as soon as you receive it.
  • Other universities may ask for a response before June 3rd. If you've accepted an offer prior to June 3rd – either from Waterloo or from another university – and you wish to change your mind, you may do so without penalty up to June 3rd.
  • No Ontario university may require a financial commitment from you before June 3, 2013.

All other applicants:

  • Most of our offers of admission are made on a continuing basis as files are completed.
  • You'll have until June 3, 2013, to respond to an Offer of Admission dated up to May 29th.
  • If you're admitted after May 29th, you'll have 14 calendar days from the date on the offer to confirm your acceptance.

Alternate offers of admission

If you're not admitted to the program to which you've applied, you may be considered for admission to an alternate program provided you meet minimum admission requirements and places are available.

  • Where a program is available in both co-op and regular, applicants not admitted to the co-op program are normally automatically considered for the corresponding regular program. If you apply to the co-op program, you do not also need to apply to the regular version of the same program.
  • In some programs, very limited admission to co-op is also available in second year.
  • The following chart indicates alternate programs for which applicants are normally considered and should be used as a guide only.

Deferring an Offer of Admission

If you have received an Offer of Admission to Waterloo for an undergraduate program but wish to begin your studies in a later term, you may request a deferral of your admission.

Deferral conditions

  • You must accept your Offer of Admission for the term to which you were initially admitted by the deadline stated on the offer.
  • You will not be required to reapply through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC).
  • You must submit a written request to the Assistant Registrar (see below) no later than one month prior to the beginning of the term to which you were initially admitted.
  • You must explain your reasons for requesting the deferral and summarize your plans for the deferral period. Include your Waterloo ID number, first and last name, the program you are requesting the deferral for, and the term you would like to start your studies.
  • Your deferral may not exceed 3 academic terms (1 year).
  • Normally, a deferral will be granted only if you have not undertaken full-time academic studies during the deferral period unless those studies are deemed to enrich your education and will not negatively affect your admissibility. Each case will be considered on an individual basis.
  • You will be guaranteed a place in residence if you were initially admitted to a first-year program. For the year you were initially admitted, you will not be required to pay a residence deposit to hold your place in residence. You will be required to pay your deposit by the deadline for the term that you actually begin your studies at Waterloo.  Details will be outlined when you receive your new Offer of Admission.
  • If you received a President’s Scholarship for the term to which you were initially admitted, the scholarship will be held for you and will be applied to the term you begin your first-year studies.
  • Consideration for other entrance scholarships will be on a case-by-case basis.
  • You must meet all conditions outlined on your original Offer of Admission by the date specified on that offer.
  • A revised Offer of Admission will be sent, and you will need to confirm in writing your intention to enrol.
  • If you're requesting a deferral for a graduate studies program (master's or PhD), please email gsoffice@uwaterloo.ca.

Note: Many programs consider deferrals for a fall term only. Residence is not guaranteed for any deferrals approved for a winter or spring term.
