Self-made millionaire at age 22

Written by: Wafa, Communications Associate co-op student

At first glance, Krishna seems like the average university student who stresses about midterms and exams. But what you would never guess is this third-year Engineering student is a self-made millionaire at the age of 22.

Bubbling with ideas, Krishna joined Enterprise Co-op (E Co-op), which offers students the opportunity to explore their own business venture and earn co-op credit while doing so. During his E Co-op term, he hired a supervisor and other team members to build his new company, Byzantium Tech, which was responsible for developing a Facebook application called Top Fans.

Within a few short months Krishna had more than 9 million people using his apps. “At first I didn’t want to sell [the company],” says Krishna. “The company was making around $5,000 a day.” Eventually however, Krishna realized what a hot ticket item he had and received offers he couldn’t refuse. On the advice of his mentor, he sold Byzantium Tech in May 2011 for $4 million.

Waterloo – #1 in Canada

Once again in 2011, Waterloo has topped the charts in the Maclean's reputational survey of Canadian universities:

          • Best Overall – #1 in Canada
          • Most Innovative – #1 in Canada for 20 years in a row
          • Best Source of Leaders of Tomorrow – #1 in Canada
          • Highest Quality – second highest in Canada

In the Globe and Mail's survey, current Waterloo students:

• Rank us #1 for career preparation among Canada's large universities
• Give us a grade of A+ for reputation among employers

How to apply checklist

Your students can follow the step-by-step instructions listed on our nextstep website for applicants to complete their application.

Below are tips to help us send your student(s) a conditional offer of admission more quickly.

1. Complete the supplementary information form

Waterloo’s supplementary application form is called the Admission Information Form (AIF).  This online form includes 5-6 questions that give your students the opportunity to tell us about their goals, extracurricular activities, work experience, awards, and circumstances that may have affected their academic performance. We use the AIF to select the incoming class and to award some scholarships.

2. Send mid-term/predicted grades

All faculties begin issuing conditional offers of admission in mid-December, with the exception of the Faculty of Engineering.

If your school is located outside of Ontario, please submit students’ mid-term/predicted grades as soon as possible so we can begin considering students for admission. The fastest way to send documents is to scan and email them to myapplication@uwaterloo.ca.  Please include your student’s Waterloo ID number in your message.

Paper copies of final secondary school results with proof of graduation should be sent in July/August. They allow us to verify that the conditions stated on offers of admission have been met.

3. Submit English language test scores (if applicable)

If an applicant’s first language is not English and if their 4 most recent years of full-time education is not in an English language school system, they must provide an English Language Proficiency test score that meets our minimum requirements.

Students who apply to Honours Arts, Social Development Studies, or the Faculty of Mathematics and who fall short of our English language test score may be eligible for admission thorough one of our “bridging programs” – Arts/English for Academic Success or Math/English Language for Academic Success.

4. Monitor application status

Through QUEST, your students can obtain information about his/her application, including the most up-to-date status of their application, and what documents we’ve received.
