Custodianship/guardianship

If

  • you're an international student AND
  • you aren't 18 years or older when you begin your studies – the age of majority in the Province of Ontario

you are required to submit documentation stating that arrangements have been made for a custodian living in Canada to act in place of your parents/legal guardians with your study permit application.

The University of Waterloo does not assign custodians to underage students, nor does the Government of Canada.

To make arrangement for someone to become your legal custodian/guardian, you'll need to complete the Custodianship Form.  This form must be

  • notarized by your parents/legal guardians from your home country
  • notarized by your Canadian custodian
  • valid for the length of time that you'll be living in Canada under the age of majority

For additional information about custodianship, please contact the Canadian Embassy or High Commission in your home country, or speak with a Citizenship and Immigration Canada representative.
