Main campus (Waterloo, ON)

Waterloo's main campus is located at 200 University Avenue West in Waterloo, ON. If you'll be taking public transit, see below for more information.

By car – from highway 401
  • Take exit 278 (from Toronto) or exit 278B (from London) to highway 8 WEST Kitchener/Waterloo
    • From Buffalo and Niagara Falls, follow the Queen Elizabeth Way in the "Toronto" direction to highway 403 WEST (1 hour); follow 403 WEST to highway 6 NORTH; follow 6 North to highway 401 WEST; follow 401 West to exit 278 (45 min.); proceed as below.
  • Follow 8 WEST to 7 EAST (called the Conestoga Parkway). Be sure to take the exit for 7 EAST (not 7 WEST)
  • Keep left; do not exit on 7 EAST (Victoria Street and Guelph). Expressway becomes 85 NORTH (formerly 86).
  • Exit at University Avenue West and drive about 3km
  • Follow University Avenue to Seagram Drive – the main entrance to UW
    • Visitor parking is available in several locations on campus. Please refer to our parking map to help you make a decision regarding where you would like to park when you arrive.
    • The cost for the day ranges from $3 to $15. Check the Visitor Parking section on the Parking Services website that lists up-to-date rates for each lot.
    • The Visitors Centre is located in South Campus Hall (SCH) at the main entrance to campus.

Alternate route to Waterloo's north entrance: To reach Waterloo's north entrance from University Avenue, turn right onto Phillip Street (first set of lights past Albert Street), then left onto Columbia Street. Turn left into the University of Waterloo.

School of Architecture (Cambridge, ON)

Waterloo's School of Architecture is located at 7 Melville Street South in Cambridge, ON – approximately 30 kilometres southeast of Waterloo's main campus. If you'll be taking public transit, see below for more information.

By car – from Highway 401
  • Take exit 282 to Hwy 24 SOUTH / Hespeler Road. – keep right to head south on Hespeler Road
  • Hespeler Road splits and becomes Water Street N. and Ainslie Street N. – keep right to continue south on Water Street N.
  • Turn right onto Main Street
  • Immediately after crossing the bridge over the river, turn left onto Melville Street S.
  • The School of Architecture will be on your left; parking is located at the far end of the building.

Traveling to the campus by

Bus

Greyhound Canada offers return trip and one-way fares to Kitchener, ON – Waterloo's twin city and Cambridge, ON. There is limited direct service to Waterloo; however, you can take the local GRT city bus to Waterloo's main campus once you arrive.

GO Transit offers service to Waterloo’s main campus daily from Mississauga and Milton. You can make connections to the entire GO Transit bus and train system at Square One, Mississauga.

Train

A VIA Rail train station is located at 126 Weber Street West in Kitchener, ON – Waterloo's twin city.

  • To reach Waterloo's main campus or the School of Architecture from the Weber Street station, you'll need to take a bus or hire a taxi.

Airplane

The closest major airport is the Pearson International Airport in Toronto, ON – approximately one hour east of Kitchener-Waterloo.

  • The easiest way to reach Waterloo's main campus or the School of Architecture from the Pearson International Airport is to hire an airporter service such as Airways Transit (519-886-2121) to take you directly to the University.

Kitchener-Waterloo is also home of the Region of Waterloo International Aiport located at 4881 Fountain Street North in Breslau, ON, which is a community just outside Kitchener.

  • To reach Waterloo's main campus or the School of Architecture from the Region of Waterloo Airport, you'll need to hire a taxi.

Taxi

Local taxis are usually waiting outside the train or bus station. If you need to call for one, we recommend the following companies:

It will cost approximately $16 CDN to travel from the bus terminal (Charles St. Transit Terminal) or Kitchener Train Station to Waterloo's main campus.  Fares vary depending on the traffic.

Public transit

Local bus service – provided by Grand River Transit (GRT) – covers the cities of Waterloo, Kitchener, and Cambridge. Bus terminals are located at 15 Charles Street West, in Kitchener, and 35 Ainslie Street South, in Cambridge. If you are taking public transit to the campus, please bring money for bus fares or to purchase adult bus tickets.  The bus fare is $2.50 CDN.

To reach Waterloo's main campus from the Charles Street terminal, you can take any of the following routes to the University of Waterloo. You can also plan your route on the GRT website!

iXpress
(Recommended Route)
  • Monday to Friday until 6:00pm - departs every 15 minutes from the Charles St. Terminal
  • Monday to Friday after 6:00pm, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays - departs every 30 minutes from the Charles St. Terminal
  • University of Waterloo stop - Davis Centre

Route 7D or 7E – Mainline

  • Departs every 15 minutes from the Charles St. Terminal
  • University of Waterloo stops - Davis Centre or B.C. Matthews Hall
Route 8 - University/Fairview
  • Departs every 30 minutes from the Charles St. Terminal
  • University of Waterloo stop - corner of University Avenue and Seagram Drive
To reach the School of Architecture from the Ainslie Street terminal, simply follow these directions.
